3:00 am
>> good morning, everyone. it is sunday, june 3rd. i'm alisyn camerota. it's a showdown in wisconsin as governor scott walker and mayor tom barrett. >> 150 budget surplus, best news of all, we actually gained jobs in 2011. >> there is no budget surplus, that's the reality. the fiscal bureau said the state was in a deficit situation. >> but is this election about more than just wisconsin? we report this morning. you decide. g.o.p. sending a bold warning about what are some calling tax magedden. >> make no mistake every single working american will see their taxes go up
3:01 am
january 1st absent action. >> will congress act will i don't l. your taxes go up next year. >> seal team 6 strikes again. top secret terrorist hideout raided by the same elite forces who took out usama bin laden. fox and friends begins right now. >> good morning, everybody. rise and shine. put on your sunglasses for my dress, please. >> it is a wee bit bright. >> you will get used to it. >> it's either this or coffee this morning. >> it's not knee on it's canariy. >> canary, wow. >> is that the actual color? >> yeah. >> we very speaking of summer, which is what your color represents. can you believe it's already june 3rd? >> no. >> unbelievable. it's already june 3rd. we have already run out of ice cream. coming up later on the show we have an ice cream truck. there is run on toasted almond
3:02 am
ice cream bars. they are gone. they are gone all across the country. how is that possible? >> we're going to get to the bottom of that mystery. >> we got an ice cream truck and we will get to the bottom of that. >> they will melt. june 5th, two days from now, a massive election in wisconsin. the recall election to attempt to it recall scott walk everywhere for the democrats. but as you have seen lately walker leading in most every poll between 5 points and 9 point. saturday a big day as both candidates scott walker and milwaukee mayor tom barrett rallying, here is scott walker. i think. >> a 4-million-dollar budget surplus and best news of all, we actually gained jobs in 2011. we are gaining jobs in 2012. sings i have taken over as your governor, i'm proud to say wisconsin has added more than 30,000 new jobs and quad
3:03 am
helped us do it. thank you for making that possible. [ applause ] i love that sign. i see it over the places as i stand with walker. let me tell you. the reason i'm proud to have people hold that sign up is because i stand with the hard working taxpayers of this state. >> does the mayor seem dressed like an astronaut? >> it's a great look for him. >> any time a politician wears props? he was wearing safety goggles there you never know when someone is going to throw something. >> is he on the factory floor. >> you have got to wear the. when you go into a food factory you wear a hair net. >> tom barrett, his opponent had a different take, certainly on the condition that the state of wisconsin is in. >> right. here is his. >> there is no budget surplus. i think that's the reality because the fiscal bureau said the state was in a deficit situation so what governor walker did said let's borrow some money. he took some debt that was going to come through this year he he refinanced it.
3:04 am
he he future in the credit card for future generations. our children and grandchildren are going to pay an additional $156 million in interest so that he could restructure the set and look good politically. >> yes. on one side governor walker saying we have 154-million-dollar surplus and barrett saying no there is a deficit. >> there is a letter from the department of administration secretary basically the guy who crunches the numbers he says at the end of 2013 there will be a budget surplus projected of 1 $54 million. >> that's the turn around. >> so governor scott walker is accurate that there will be a surplus but as of what it is today, not sure. >> and whether or not these cuts have, of course, have led to that area. you saw the duling rallies, you saw governor scott walker on the floor. did he not show up at a tea party rally. a number of high profile
3:05 am
wisconsin republicans and tea party members showed up to a big rally there in racine county. among them was representative paul ryan talking about the future going forward. wisconsin, it's not just about wisconsin. he was saying it's about the nation at large. take a listen. >> it's really what will determine the direction of our site and our country for that matter. this election has so many consequences. and it's really whether or not, you know, governor works for us the people or the other way around. >> tommy thompson also talking to governor huckabee last night on his show. he said, look, the battle in wisconsin, regardless of what other people are saying it is all about the unions. that is the focus of it. that's why we are having this recall election. listen to tommy thonks from wisconsin. >> about 50% of the people that love scott walker and about 48, 449% that dislike him. it's splitting families and splitting everything. it gets down to collective bargaining. people say oh, it's some other things but it's truly whether or not the unions are going to
3:06 am
control the state of wisconsin or whether individuals that are entrepreneurs, independents and so on are going to have the control of this state. i'm confident that the people of the state of wisconsin are going to say recalls should only be held when people commit a crime or malfeasance in office. scott walker has done nothing except do what he said he was going to do. >> it's funny. we lt. governor and she said it was not about the unions. here is her take on what this election is all about. >> this was never about unions. this was about fiscal responsibility. you know, i have two little girls at home. one is a kindergartner and one is a 3rd grader look at colsz drivers. regardless who makes the decisions you have tonel aize that and know that if you don't stand between them and
3:07 am
those dangerous fiscal problems, then they're going to have to deal with that themselves. >> it's interesting. is it possible that it's both? this was all about the unions, why he was being recalled. this has not been about unions the last several weeks. if you watch the campaign ads in wisconsin, they are not talking about collective bargaining. that has not been the issue. i think in the end both sides may agree this was a waste of a tremendous amount of money. >> maybe that's why president obama and obama ha administration is staying away from this. he hasn't gone there they haven't traveled there. keeping the focus on mitt romney and not focusing on wisconsin. he continues to stick with the attack line of going after bain capital. this is sort of doubling down from the campaign on exactly how they are going to go forward. from campaign spokesman ben la bolt says this about it mitt romney has made tenure as central by juted the central premise of his candidacy and claimed t is what credentials
3:08 am
him to be a job creator as president. governor romney's goal wasn't job creation as he claims. it was profit max immigration for himself and matters profited himself and partners. he profited off bankrupting companies and outsourcing jobs. >> you can't go after private equity. it has to be one of the engines that drives the economy. democrats have said that for some reason, the obama administration has said in just some of the most recent articles that they are going to stick with this. that they do think it's resonating with people. that they think that the attack on bain. now why that is more significant than his time as governor which arguably is more applicable to running the country. >> page to the governor attack line. it wasn't gist cory booker. t was bill clinton. it was stephan rattner obama's czar. governor reynolds of pennsylvania. -- i mean the governor now of
3:09 am
massachusetts devol patrick. they have all stood up for the industry and bain capital. >> now steny hoyer this morning supporting what bill clinton had said the other day about this, which i think bill clinton is correct. private equity is a very important aspect of our growing economy. obviously there is good practice in private equity. there are brad practices. you credit side bad practice but not the whole itself. you saw the administration seemingly turning a page that they were now attacking him he was 47th in the country for job growth. mitt romney has been talking and hitting president obama on job growth when the administration was turning 'it back and saying wait a second. when you were governor of massachusetts you didn't create any jobs. >> isn't that more relevant? for whatever reason they are sticking with the bain critique and criticism. it's interesting because one of the success stories of bain was dominoes. they also had staples, sports authority. those are the ones that they tout and trumpet as big success stories. how does the domino ceo think
3:10 am
that bain treated them? here is their take. >> we had a fabulous relationship with them. i mean, really, it was very very positive. they bought us in the beginning of 1998. they were great partners for us. actually, one of them still serves on our board even though they have since disinvested. they have shaped dominoes over the course of the last decade to make us as successful as we were. >> granted, there were also failures. there were failures. there were success stories. there were more success stories at bain than there were failures. >> when people crunched the numbers were 20% of companies that went bankrupt. >> dominoes changed its sauce recently. >> is that good or bad. >> added cheesy stuff to the crust. >> are you pro-or con. >> i'm always pro-cheese. eye anytime you can add cheese. >> glut ten free pizza. >> if we can get off message for a moment. >> if you look at the numbers, it must be said about the
3:11 am
day-to-day hers race numbers in the campaign. here is a new rasmussen poll. this is the presidential race dead heat. >> wow, look at that. >> the numbers that are more important is the economic numbers and how americans feel about the economy. when you look at those polls, that's for more telling. it's top of everyone's list about what is most important to their family. and if the economy is the thing that's most important to their it family, the polls that represent the economy are most important. >> what we are seeing mitt romney ride. a will the of polls have shown him gaining with republic women. since he secured the nomination, that number has grown greatly. so now there is numbers that he needs to shore up. and one, of course, could be the latino number. could he do that with v.p. still a lot of room there. >> speaking of the v.p. pick, very interesting. because there is some speculation that mitt romney could actually name the vp weeks before has historically happened. usually they name their vice presidential pick right before the convention.
3:12 am
that generates buzz and drives momentum through the convention. however, maybe this summer, since it's sort of the doldrums of the news cycle do it. that would help generate a lot more fundraising if mitt romney in the next couple of weeks were to name a v.p. pick. >> it's not going to happen in the next couple of weeks. >> july. >> if it happened before john mccain chosen sarah palin to be his running mate just a few short days before the convention. fundraising. you have two people that can go out and fund raise. not just one. two different parts of the presumptive administration going out and trying to raise money. >> does that to you guys suggest that it won't be someone safe won't be someone like with respect rob portman a very solid senator to. me if he is picking him early it says christie, rubio, martina. someone who could shake it up and draw up the press cycle.
3:13 am
if it's someone safe that could be buried by convention time. >> a lot of signs right now if you read the tea leaves could be pointing to tim pawlenty again. >> back on chris christie. >> is it? why is that? even though chris christie has said under no circumstance also i ever ever ever ever be vice president. >> a few weeks ago he he said i could be persuaded. >> a wise political man once said you never have someone to overshadow you. that's the only problem with christie. with his personality, boisterous speaker, would that overshadow romney? that's where my money goes. >> i know because i like what you said. >> palin overshadowed mccain. >> you aren't putting money on the table who do you got. >> i think they are going to go to someone safe. to jeb bush's point you can't have two old white guys running on the republic ticket. you need diversity as jeb bush
3:14 am
said. >> maybe by 9:00 you can have a pick. >> obviously just talking about the republic side. is it possible that the veep stakes is still up for grabs on the democrat sides. favorite parlor game as to whether or not joe biden would be replaced and hillary clinton. they too said never ever ever which means it could happen. >> a very smart guy, smart columnist with the "wall street journal" said he he has spoken to a nufn prominent republicans says the buzz is getting louder that there is going to be a swap out. there is going to be a veep swap and that hillary clinton would take the role as vice president and joe biden would go over to the state department and take her job. >> i would feel better if he had spoken to a number of prominent democrats. >> prominent democrats who have said what this does is she is the most popular democrat in the country. >> by a mile. >> by a landslide. >> wouldn't this. >> it would absolutely shake things up.
3:15 am
>> it sure would. >> my money i can't see him doing it. i mean, joe biden is the perfect attack dog for obama right now in the campaign trail. i would be shocked to see that it would certainly shake things up. >> women, perhaps, she is very popular. >> no question. no question. let us know what you think. >> i can't he see the downside to it? >> what is the downside. >> shows there is some sort of panic or discord in the administration t shows that something wasn't working, i guess. >> let us know what you think. weigh in on both of those to dave's point on othe horse race on the republic side. who would you pick for vice president on the republic side and 00 on the democratic side. >> dave is looking for money. put a wager on it is he not satisfied if you make an offer without any doe. >> you know who elms is looking for money. warning that if we don't extend the bush era tax cuts. the payroll tax extension
3:16 am
agreed upon by president obama and the republicans earlier this year that there will be what he called a taxmagedden. >> unless coming act largest tax increase in history. $500 billion. some have called it tax meggeden. make no mistake every single working american will see hirst taxes go up on january 1st absent action. family budgets will be squeezed even tighter. disposable income will shrink and many jobs will be destroyed. >> listen, if this sounds like deja vu all over again? it is. the constant national debate that we're having. it seems like we take a two month hiatus and then we get back to the tax mageddon should or should not taxes be raised? it's been going on for the better part of two years. philosophical divide of whether or not you think that the rich need to put in more money and have their taxes go
3:17 am
up or whether or not you think that they are the ones who support the rest of the country and they need to keep their own profits so they can hire people and grow their businesses. >> like it or not, they are going to have a tax increase, january 1st, can you see it, $500 billion. essentially, what happens if those bush tax cuts run out, you know's what, the president right now wants taxes to go up for those individuals making more than 200,000 or couples making more than 250,000. now, you have to figure that those people, come january 1st, make lifestyle changes. there is going to be a major difference in your paycheck come january 1st. you're going to have to start living your life different. if you are in new york. if you are in l.a. if you are someone who is not fabulously wealthy making $250,000 a year in this town, you make a change. you just lost an annual raise or whatever. >> and on the payroll side of things, of course, you are going to see that coming directly out of your paycheck. the democrats and white house
3:18 am
have argued. this was sun set put in place by the bush administration in the first place. it was extension. the question was and from democrats is how do you pay for it the other side says you don't pay for tax cuts you make other cuts to pay for them. they can't agree on cutting anything. neither party has cut anything. where does that money come from? all signs point to this massive deficit being run up because there is no way to cover the cost of the tax cuts. >> we will relitigate this after the elections. >> let's do that in fact let's do it every day until the election. we have breaking news terrorism story. four suspected acome -- accomplices of the times square bomber are being free men after having been acquitted by a pakistani court. peter doocy has more on that story. >> good morning. four men were reportedly acquitted in pakistan. one of them for giving the attempted times square bomber financial assistance and the other three with being that money man's accomplices and

that because there has been precious little talk about collective bargaining rights. it seems to have gone away pretty much as an issue for the opponents of governor walker. they are talking more about corruption charges against some of walker's associates when he was the county executive for milwaukee. but if walker wins, it is going to be seen and i think rightly so, as a big defeat for unions, certainly for public workers unions maybe for all unions. i think you will see a new push by other states and you have seen this already in places like indiana and ohio. to cut back on collective bargaining rights, especially for public workers unions. i think it does have national complications. conversely if barrett wins the mayor of milwaukee i think you will see unions on the march. >> beyond the implications for unions this has implications for president obama and that's -- he is avoiding it because it's sort of radioactive, this race, but does this say something about who will win in november?
5:17 am
>> well, it okay i don't think it necessarily does. the most recent poll shows walker, the governor, winning, beating the recall by about 7 or will points. but it also shows obama beating romney by 7 or 8 points. in wisconsin. we should point out, wisconsin is a famously blue state. the last time that a republic won the state of wisconsin in a presidential election was ronald reagan in 1984 when he won 49 states. that gives you a sense how hard it is for a republic to win wisconsin. having said that, if walker wins you can be sure that republicans are going to feel newly emboldened there and democrats will feel somewhat concerned. it would be a big state. if you could flip the traditionally blue state red, that would be a big win for romney and make his path to the white house that much easier. >> chris, as much as i would like to hear your guest debate the new york soda restrictions, ed gillespie and stephan rattner, i would
5:18 am
imagine the attacks on bain will come come up. stephan rattner -- auto czar dedefended romney and the private equity model. do you think that's a line they are sticking with. >> yeah, i think they will stick with it it they will be more careful to make the point not that something is inherently wrong with private equity but that the specific thing that romney was doing they claim was he was interested in returning money to his investors. he wasn't interested in creating jobs. and, therefore, he wouldn't be a god president, a good steward of the economy for all americans. that is a harder argument to make when you have unemployment going up to 8.2% and only 69,000 jobs created last month. yes, we will be talking to ed gillespie, senior advisor to the romney campaign and stephan rattner who was a big supporter of democrats. was as you say obama's car czar, but, like a lot of people. including bill clinton this

event is about to get underway, a celebration of the queen's 60 years on the throne and, keep in mind, that is an extraordinary achievement. no other monarch except tor queen victoria ever hit that milestone of 60 years, called a diamond jubilee and she has already had her gold jubilee at 50 and the silver at 25 years on the throne and the significant thing is what a constant she has been in the lives of people in great britain, everyone alive under 85 has known only queen elizabeth, who became queen at age 25. and it is, truly significant, an emotional moment and weekend for queen elizabeth, certainly and for the family and all of the people of great britain cheering and have a ball behind me. >> dave: video of some of the arrivals now. in these times of austerity, europe is broke and we are hearing of bailouts left and right. is there some push back against all of this grand celebration,

>> reporter: i think it is a terrific development that happened in the royal family and happened really painlessly. changed the rules. if kate and william have a daughter, first, she will rule as queen of england. there is no longer the rule that the son, first born son as charles was, remember, princess anne came before charles and he was first in line and is first in line, still and it is fascinating, if they have a daughter she'll absolutely be the queen of england and that has a lot of people positive. >> getting word, martha and i'm sure you are there on the ground that we are awaiting the queen at any moment now. take us through the process, where is she being held, is she in a waiting room? what is going on? >> reporter: she is, they are all sort of coming in, they were driven to the pier where they are all getting on the ship and charles an camilla and the big moment is always the arrival of the queen as we remember from wedding, it was all perfectly
